Make the Most of Our Encounter

Discuss this with your students, too. They need to be in the right spirit.

Help us make this extraordinary program work.

Understanding the Life of a Changemaker – and our / your / your students’ role.

Understanding Teenage Changemakers

Thank you for helping us make this work.

Teenage changemakers are housed and fed by their parents.

However, their time is limited, also by having to attend school. Their media schedule is enormous.

They use every minute to toil for the needy ones. The ones suffering from hunger, violence, extinction.

They love to inspire and educate their peers, and like us at YL, they want to empower many.

To achieve this, you, us, them, have to work together.

Here’s the challenge:

Put yourself into our and their real life for a moment.

For how many meet-ups can we engage a teen hero*ine, to INSPIRE = GIVE SPIRIT to an audience and make sure that they do not burn out? Once a day? Once a week, a month?

  • your class acts without respect, interest, is not engaged.
  • your hero*ine asked their teacher to quit class for an hour for you.
  • your hero*ine got up at 4 in the morning for you
  • your hero*ine stayed up until midnight for you
  • your hero*ine said no to another important thing for you
  • your hero*ine gets an emergency call by one of their allies but stays with you

Imagine we get our hero*ine friends to meet with 2, 3, 4 classes and each experience is suboptimal, lukewarm, not only irrelevant to real, tangible, positive change, but even unpleasant and irritating, messing up their day?!

You understand that they would GIVE UP ON IT real fast. And us at YL leave a really bad taste with them.

This would destroy this unique high potential program and sabotage the magical opportunities for many.

Hence, we need you to make it possible with us.

Here’s how : let’s not focus on your group being edutained with information. Let’s team up and make it a meaningful contribution to the hero*ine’s cause, so they are excited about each request, because they know some entire group is awakened on fire to rock robust positive changes. This means : it makes concrete, tangible impact

Needless to say, this not only fulfills the common goals of edutainment but literally fills up the pedagogical Holy Grail!

We have dreamed up 4 ways to make this happen, which strongly amplify the pedagogical value, the learning, the impact and the follow-up potentials.

Understanding Adult Changemakers

Adult changemakers are usually social entrepreneurs. Even when they get a salary somewhere, they “think and act in many projects”.

Your common NGO, Greenpeace or Amnesty international presenter is either (a) staff paid by donations or state grants (tax money), or (b) an unpaid intern, student, surviving on parent’s money, or a state (tax money) grant.

So, our changemakers are not of that kind. No one pays them a salary to be there for you. No one donates for that. no one gives them tax money and grants for that.

Here’s what you need to know about a self-employed entrepreneur or freelancer. They spend time on developing own projects or acquiring a project. this time of acquring takes about half their time. Yes, search a month or two, then get work, paid for 1 month. this is why when they work they need to gain the double daily salary. To make up for the non-earning phase. This Is Normal in Your Society.

Usually teachers don’t know this. NGO folks don’t know this. And then, some think we are greedy suckers for charging money. No. You just live in a rosy BUBBLE.

So, social entrepreneurs being badass busy people, but willing to empower youth, WE AT YL want to make this work.

We want to make it worthwhile, satisfying and pleasant for the changemaker to spend their time with your group.

Ask yourself: does it make sense for a “national team coach” to spend time with a group of people who have a beer before the match, or don’t even know or like the sport? No! He wouldn’t even turn up even if you offered payment, and you would not book a meeting in the first place because it makes no sense – and worse : it would be shameful!

We have to emphasize this here, because we want to enable these encounters but it has happened before that people don’t understand what is really going on.

Hence, to make this great thing work, we need to work together. We have dreamed up a few factors that are simple, high value for everyone involved and generate the feel that makes this effort of taking time off the core mission, and coming together not work but MAJOR FUN AND UPLIFTING EXPERIENCE AND PART OF THE MISSION.

1. Know

why you are doing this and who you are meeting?

These are the Gandhis and Gryffindores of our time. The people that give humanity hope for people and planet. Cheesy celebrities and the super rich have nothing to offer you to to protect what you love, and to achieve your dreams.

You get to meet badass changemaker athletes, noble knights, genius visionaries. These are your coaches for creating the world that your heart desires.

How will you use this special moment in your life?

2. Prepare

These are humanity’s finest, and they are busyDo not waste their energy, your time, limit your experience. Read up on their story and solution using our Multimedia Hero Profiles, poster sets and action guides. This enables a much more meaningful encounter :

As their story sinks in, some group members will have ideas, come up with burning questions to ask. As you take action, you will have your own story to share, something to give and celebrate! This way, you can meet at eye-level. And as you become part of one story, you can dream up next steps together. I mean, wow …

3. Make it Memorable

to them. What is their dream? How can you help achieve their vision and soothe their hearts? The Action Guides tell you how to support and replicate their initiative locally and globally.

to the planet. What is Her dream? That you make grand positive impact for her innocent children alive today and in the future. What can you dream up together to make a relevant impact. What could cause ripple effects, create a mark on Earth, weave a thread into the fabric of human history, small or big, that never stops?

4. Make it a Breeze

Make it fun.

  • How can you make it casual and enjoyable?
  • How can you totally mess it up?

Discuss this with your students. It’s a learning experience of lifelong value.

Test the tech and have it set up. Appoint a student tech crew to arrange it well before the meeting. Honor them for it.

5. Document Your Experience

Add student journalism : form a volunteer crew to take casual photos and notes on preparation, student voices and ideas, your activities, the meeting and testimonials to share with

  • your personal, club and school news and social media
  • with local news media
  • us and YL Magazine
  • changemakers’ social media feeds

Another excellent multi-faceted learning experience that honors everyone’s efforts + boosts local and global youth leadership + calls on audiences to join the movement.

6. Take it Easy

Expect the unexpected. Be it inter/national conferences or google hangouts, we have seen everything fail. So, imagine the worst case, and to laugh about it, take it as an exercise in real life, also tell your students. Classic surprise worst cases

  • snow blizzard
  • students on leave for chess championship
  • emergency – exam repetition, a regional revolt
  • forgot a major religious or family matter
  • they are bombing Yemen
  • no stable internet or sound though it was fine earlier
  • mixed up time zones, alarm clock fails
  • sudden invitation to major event or talkshow
  • it’s nighttime at your hero*ine’s wilderness camp
  • hero*ine falls ill
  • you fall ill

No one to blame, life happens.
